The hundreds or thousands of people who’ve decided to pick your church to attend. How smooth your worship services are executed. The modern facilities you’ve developed. The focus of God bettering your life that your church baits its congregants with week after week. You’ve got programs for every age group (Infant Bible Quiz) and every stage of life (the Ex-Chef Recovery Program) So what does impress me about your church? How it is giving more money away than spending on its own ministry costs. Your worship services are real, not produced. Rather than simply amass oceans of people, your church has churned out so many incredible leaders for Christ taking a stand in their church (even if it’s not yours anymore), workplace/school, and family. The focus for your church is to serve God and his interests, not how God can help us and our interests. You don’t need all those programs that other churches must hire full-time staff members to run, because your congregation assumes the responsibility to love and disciple one...

If you’re going to be a church who duels the world, you actually need to be a church who duels the church world. Because all too often, churches reflect the values of society rather than standing out as a light to society. As a youth pastor, I have found that much of youth ministry out there is about combating the worldly culture. Yet, if the teenager’s parents and the teenager’s church don’t “duel the world,” usually very little will be accomplished. I think it’s a better approach to try to change the culture of one’s church, and to invest in the parents’ lives/spirituality (which will change the culture of the church). In addition, I also believe there’s validity to challenging students to moving beyond the spirituality they see in their church and in their home. Some churches out there aren’t willing to engage or confront the world/culture. Others take up the challenge. Those who refuse to do so are becoming increasingly irrelevant. For those who take up the challenge, I offer a metaphor. Imagine going into a duel…would you want to have a weapon (sword, gun, whatever) that is superior to your enemy or inferior? Would you want to have shielding that is superior to your enemy or inferior? David was encouraged to take up the king’s armor (trying in vain to compete with his enemy) in his seemingly despairing and desperate fight against a looming giant. The odds were against him. Anything would be better than nothing. Churches today seem desperate to find weapons/shielding that can compete with what the world offers–in the effort to be superior. Yet David refuses these gifts/tools, because they seemed to actually limit his abilities, and chooses to use what he knows best. With God on our side, why do churches feel the need to spend millions of dollars on buildings, programs, staff, interior design, sound systems, etc.? Not that any of these things are inherently bad, but could it be that these may be similar to Saul’s armor? Have we lost faith in God? I applaud churches who take up the challenge of engaging/confronting this world/culture. My question is–what are we relying on in the fight? Is there a more powerful tool than God’s Word? What about agape love? And what about the power of the Holy Spirit? And how far might personal integrity go towards earning validity in the world’s eyes? These things may seem inferior to what the world offers…but with faith in God, the sky is the limit. Yes, it may look like simply a slingshot and five stones. But...

1. Everything is so loud that you can’t hear yourself or any of the congregation singing, even if they are. Makes it feel like a concert, not a congregational worship time. We really aren’t adding anything. 2. The music is all clappy-happy. We often seem to gloss over the fact that we are singing to the God of the universe. 3. Worship is done for its own sake. Many times, it feels like we take time to worship simply because that’s what we always do when we come together. After all, you can’t have church without singing. Or you can’t go to a conference without awesome worship. 4. The band rocks. When the music is so good, and there’s a rockin’ guitar solo, or the band just nails it, oftentimes I feel worship is cheapened. 5. I’m tired or having a bad day. It’s amazing how such “earthly” things can affect things we try to accomplish spiritually. Like when Jesus’ disciples couldn’t stay awake to pray in the garden. What better reason do we need to eat right, get good sleep, and build healthy relationships with one another? Otherwise, these things can often hinder our relationship with God. 6. Ritual is equated with worship. I think having a liturgy can be a good thing, but it’s not the same as worship. Just like singing songs isn’t the same thing as worship. When a congregation is just going through the motions, I find it hard to worship. 7. The congregation is coerced to worship in a certain way. Some would say that worship leaders shouldn’t encourage everyone to raise hands, etc, but I disagree with that statement. I think it’s the leader’s job to lead us, and encourage us to do things together. However, when the worship leader is trying to “make the Spirit move,” that ruins it. “A person who loves community will kill it. But the person who loves his brother or sister will build it wherever he goes.” 8. Form is elevated above substance. It shouldn’t matter what style of music we are using. I was talking to a friend earlier today about how I see many similarities in Catholics and Pentecostals. They both have a tendency to get mystical–and oftentimes, loony. The reason for my conversation was because I discovered a Catholic song/prayer that seemed very meaningful to me. My friend is Pentecostal. It’s amazing to me to think that Mother Teresa was a Catholic. She loved Jesus more than I’ll ever do so, and yet her theological framework and understanding of church/salvation is so far removed from what I perceive the truth to be.  A lot of the Catholic faith is just plain loony. But there are several people in that faith who love Jesus more than I’ll ever love him. The same is true for Pentecostals. They’ve always got to be casting out demons, or receiving a “fresh word” from the Lord, or getting filled up with “the anointing,” blah, blah, blah. And yet, there are countless people from within that framework who love Jesus more than I ever will. And then there’s the denomination that I’m currently participating in–the United Methodists. The lack of spirituality that one discovers in this denomination is not anything less than frightening. And yet there are people within this denomination that love Jesus more than I’ll ever. How does God do it? He gets a hold of us, and we fall in love with him and devote our entire lives to him. And yet we are so loony. We are all confined by the way we perceive God and the truth to be. We have all our presuppositions, which are probably more false than we would care to admit. And yet, we can still see the love and power of God through broken, weak people who keep getting it all wrong. These people attribute things to God that are really the result of their upbringing. They hold wacky beliefs about God or this world. Their denominations/faiths are so off-based. But somehow, they’ve fallen in love with Jesus, and Jesus still loves them.
